One of the features planned for Lights Out! was a series of author interviews conducted by Robert McCammon. Unfortunately, the newsletter ended before all of the interviews were published. One of the “lost” interviews was with Chet Williamson, author of Reign, Second Chance, Ash Wednesday, and many others. A noted actor, too, Chet has recently recorded several audiobooks for Crossroad Press.

The interview with Chet was conducted by Robert McCammon and Hunter Goatley while sitting in a hallway of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois, at about 1:30 AM during the 1990 World Fantasy Convention (November 3, 1990).

The microcassette used to record the interview was recently rediscovered, and the interview is presented here for your listening pleasure. If you’ve ever used a microcassette recorder, you know that high-fidelity audio was not one of its calling cards. Every effort was expended to make the audio as listenable as possible, but you’ll find that their voices are still a little muddy, and there’s background noise from other groups of people in the hallway.

You can listen to the 24-minute interview in the player below, or right-click on the download icon to download the MP3.

  1. Listening to this was a fun trip into the past! Interesting thing is that I still feel pretty much the same way about writing. And our discussion about horror being ghettoized is very similar to the discussions today about ebooks. No matter what the era, there’s always something to bitch about!
