When Subterranean Press published the limited edition of The Providence Rider in 2012, they included a bonus Matthew Corbett short story called “Death Comes for the Rich Man.” Several years later, the story was reprinted in the anthology Subterranean: Tales of Dark Fantasy 3.

Until now, the only way to read the story was by having a copy of one of those books. The story is not included in the upcoming collection Seven Shades of Evil, so Robert McCammon decided to release the story digitally here as a free gift for his readers. You can read the story as a web page here, or you can download the story in various ebook formats.

The cover art for the ebook is by Vincent Chong. The illustration accompanied the story in the limited edition of The Providence Rider. Thank you to Vincent for letting us re-use the image for the ebook files!

Robert McCammon’s birthday pic!

I wanted to say thank you for all the birthday wishes! My daughter took the picture and her pronouncement was ‘a dunce hat for a dunce’ which tells you the amount of respect I get around here!

Another year! I am working on Leviathan now and I have mixed feelings…happy to be finishing the series the way I wanted it to be, but sad because I’ll be (in a way) losing the people I’ve spent so much time with lo these many years. They really do seem like family to me! I’ll miss them.

I guess I should appreciate the editor in that prestigious New York publishing house who said she didn’t know what the word leviathan meant. It gave me the thought to put the word somewhere in every Matthew Corbett book, and in the end it has become extremely important to the series and I think means something in a very surprising way.

So, should I thank her?

NO!

But it’s been so much fun doing this series, and the great thing is I got to do it exactly as I wanted without any hint of interference.

So much for the adventures of the Alabama hick in the hallowed halls of New York publishing!

I did it my way! (There’s a song of that title, I do think)

Anyway, thanks again for the birthday wishes! Pretty soon I’ll talk more about the upcoming release of Seven Shades of Evil, which of course is a departure being shorter material but I hope you enjoy the ongoing trials, tribulations and triumphs of Matthew, Hudson, Katherine, Minx and Berry!

Cheers!

“The Wicked Gambler” is a character who represents the era in which the Matthew Corbett stories are set. Robert McCammon’s next release is a collection of stories from Matthew Corbett’s world, Seven Shades of Evil. In his author photo for the book, Robert McCammon had makeup artist and photographer Amanda Chapman create “The Wicked Gambler.”

Robert McCammon has written a new short story entitled “The Wicked Gambler and His Walking Cane” to tell the origin of the walking cane that can be seen in the author photo.
