Happy New Year! This seemed like a good time to flashback many years ago with two photos recently unearthed by Tony Thomas. These promotional photos of Robert McCammon were taken by The Huntsville Times in May 1988 and April 1992. I don’t know if either was actually printed in the paper.

Robert McCammon was a co-presenter, with Ali Wentworth, on the grand finale of the PBS show The Great American Read. His 1989 novel Swan Song had been among the list of 100 of America’s favorite books. In the final results, Swan Song came in at #94.

You can watch the episode on the PBS site:

It can also be found on YouTube.

Robert and Ali begin at about the 10:02 mark.

Here are a few screenshots, as well as the clip of Swan Song.

Back in May, the PBS show The Great American Read launched. The goal: to pick American’s favorite book out of a list of 100 of American’s favorite books, according to PBS surveys. Robert McCammon’s Swan Song is among those 100 books.

It’s not too late to vote for Swan Song and others!

The final episode of The Great American Read will air on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. Robert McCammon will be among the “notable attendees”! Here’s an excerpt from an article at WOUB Digital:

The clock is ticking to cast your final votes for America’s best-loved novel. THE GREAT AMERICAN READ will air its “Grand Finale” episode and reveal America’s choice for its number one book on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, 8:00-9:00 p.m.  on PBS stations nationwide.

The “Grand Finale” episode will be filmed in front of a live audience in New York City. Notable attendees will include host Meredith Vieira; actor Wil Wheaton; authors Diana Gabaldon, Robert McCammon and Amy Tan; journalist Lesley Stahl; literary expert Baratunde Thurston and more.

At this time, I don’t know exactly what his role in the finale will be, but make your plans to tune in on October 23, 2018, for “The Grand Finale”!

Tuesday, December 5, is Robert McCammon Day at the Alabama Booksmith. At 5:00 PM CST, he will read from his amazing upcoming novel, The Listener. The book will be published in February, 2018, but signed first editions ($25) will officially go on sale at this event.

Not only will a pre-order guarantee a signed first edition at regular publisher’s price, and come with a certificate signed by Mr. McCammon authenticating that this copy was purchased prior to publication, but all purchases come with a chance in the drawing for one of the most beautiful treasures we’ve ever seen. Here are the details of the prize:

On March 13, 2017, the thirtieth anniversary limited edition of Swan Song was published. Only 552 copies were offered for sale and they sold out the first day. There were 500 numbered (originally $150) and 52 lettered (originally $400). All came in a gorgeous slipcase and were illustrated throughout. The lettered editions feature a magnificent gatefold by David Ho.

The Alabama Booksmith acquired the author’s personal collection (lettered P.C.) and that will be the lucky winner’s prize. This very, very precious and valuable gem (appraised at $500).  This copy comes with a parchment certificate authenticating provenance and signed by Robert McCammon. The drawing will be at the launch of The Listener in February, 2018.

Mr. McCammon will be happy to personalize any title currently on our shelves and we’ll ship December 6.

The Alabama Booksmith is located at 2626 19th Pl S, Birmingham, Alabama 35209.
