The Providence Rider
Robert R. McCammon. Subterranean (www.subterraneanpress.com), $26.95 (416p) ISBN 978-1-59606-466-9

Problem-solver Matthew Corbett’s past comes back to haunt him in McCammon’s intriguing fourth historical thriller (after 2010’s Mister Slaughter). Shanghaied in 1704 from Manhattan to Pendulum Island, the Bermuda home of his nemesis, criminal mastermind Professor Fell, Matthew is tasked with finding out who among Fell’s criminal confederates is leaking to England Fell’s plans to sell a devastating new type of weapon to the nation’s European enemies. Matthew must not only risk betraying his mother country to do Fell’s bidding but also find some way to save his girlfriend, Berry Grigsby, whom Fell is holding in pawn until Matthew completes the job. Once again, McCammon provides a colorful and well-researched depiction of colonial America, enlivened by a rogues’ gallery of well-drawn characters. Hair’s-breadth escapes and the teasing promise that characters who appear to have been disposed of might resurface in future adventures make this a rollicking good yarn. Agent: Cameron McClure, DMLA. 1. Been reading since the days of Mystery Walk and Swann Song and was skeptical of this series since it was such a departure. Until I started reading it. Now, I eagerly await the next installment. Matter of fact I’ve been racing through The Five so I’ll be ready for the main course. By the way, any chance of it being an ebook? I love reading on my Kindle and since I’m not as young as I was when Mystery Walk and They Thirst and others came out I enjoy the ability to enlarge the font and change the background the Kindle provides.

    1. Hi, Stephen!

Yes, The Providence Rider will be released as an ebook a few weeks after the physical book is published.

Glad you tried and have enjoyed the Matthew Corbett books!

  2. I was flabbergasted at the size of THE PROVIDENCE RIDER sample-download. OMG! Intriguing and mysterious! Dying to read more. Can’t say more might blurb a spoiler. Matthew Corbett has become my favorite character. His decency and tenacity captivate me. Not to mention his super-sleuth intellect. I have a PROVIDENCE RIDER T–shirt. I love gushing about Matthew when inquiries are made about my Tee. *big grin* “He is superior to Sherlock Holmes, handsome and endearing.”

Thank you, Robert McCammon for signing the Subpress, special edition books. As you ice your hands and wrists, know that your signature on your books are greatly appreciated by my friends and I. <3

Keep writing. We are waiting to buy all your books. *big grin*

  3. Why is Mr. McCammon so adverse to issuing Audio books? Mr. King has made a lot of money doing so!

    1. Mr. McCammon is not averse to audiobook productions of his work. In fact, he’d be happy to see more of them. But you have to have an audio company who can get the audio rights for the books. Pocket owns the audio rights for some of the titles.

The Five and Swan Song are available as unabridged audiobooks from Audible. Pocket chose to reissue their early ’90s abridgements of Boy’s Life and Gone South; they own the audio rights to those books.

I can say that there will be more audiobooks coming from Audible, but I do not have any details yet on when.
